Physical Education

'Let your light shine' (Matthew 5:16)

Intent

At Farcet C of E Primary School the intent of teaching Physical Education is for all children to experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills which will enhance a life-long participation in physical activity and healthy life choices. Our aim is to give all children the tools and understanding required to make a positive impact on their own physical health and well-being. Through PE we promote self-esteem, confidence and teamwork skills through problem solving and developing physical confidence. Children will build resilience and good sportsmanship through the experience of both successes and failure in individual and team-based activities.

Implementation

PE at Farcet C of E Primary School is taught by a combination of class teachers and qualified sports coaches. Children have equal opportunities to participate in a range of physical activities in a supportive environment where effort and success is recognised. We offer exercise through-out the day during PE lessons, after school clubs, outdoor learning and lunchtime provision. Our PE curriculum aims to ensure that all children develop the fundamental skills needed to excel in a wide range of physical activities by providing a broad and balanced curriculum. The children will have the opportunity to learn a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall activities, striking and fielding events, gymnastics, dance, athletics, OAA and swimming. We aim to provide all children with at least 2 hours of exciting and active PE lessons every week and ensure that all lessons are inclusive of all children. Our curriculum is designed so that there is a clear journey of skill progression through each sport taught. Children will learn the importance of a healthy life-style, self-expression and vital concepts such as fair play and good sportsmanship. Within lessons children are taught to use subject specific vocabulary to develop their communication skills.

PE Curriculum Long Term Plan PE Progression Document

Impact

Our PE curriculum is high quality, well thought-out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes.
  • Analysis of spending of PE and Sport Premium;
  • Photo and video evidence of the children’s practical learning;
  • Pupil discussions about their learning which includes discussion of their thoughts, ideas, processing and evaluations of work.
  • Learning walks and reflective staff feedback (teacher voice);
  • Analysis of pupil participation in clubs.

 Children are encouraged to understand the relevance of what they are learning and its relation to everyday life. They should have determination to want to succeed and challenge themselves and take responsibility of their own health and fitness. They should also have the communication, teamwork and leadership skills in which they can transfer to other situations.

We want to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives and undertake new life experiences now and in the future.

Furthermore, the impact of the PE curriculum at Farcet C of E Primary can be seen through:

  • Our children being inspired to have a love of sport and to grow up to have happy and healthy lives; utilising the skills and knowledge they have acquired through PE
  • Our children becoming stewards of their own learning (both in and out of the classroom) and supporting their peers to develop and excel in sport and across the curriculum
  • Our children showing a willingness and ability to try new sports and activities, push themselves and persevere in light of new challenges
  • Our children learning to take responsibility for their own health and fitness

We want to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives and undertake new life experiences now and in the future.
