Mathematics

'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.' Philippians 4:13

At Farcet C. of E. Primary School, we believe that Mathematics teaches children how to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to calculate, reason and solve problems. It enables children to understand relationships and patterns in both number and space in their everyday lives.

We use White Rose Maths programme to inform our maths planning as it emphasises a comprehensive understanding of mathematics. It's a pedagogical approach that has been designed to enhance maths skills and problem-solving skills.

The core of White Rose Maths is the maths mastery approach, which focuses on depth rather than acceleration, ensuring that key concepts are fully grasped before moving on.

We fully adapt the planning and resources to meet the needs of our mixed year group cohorts, ensuring appropriate scaffolding and challenge is available to all pupils.

Our aims are:

  • to promote enjoyment of learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion;
  • to promote confidence and competence with numbers and the number
  • system and secure mental strategies;
  • to develop the ability to solve problems through decision-making and
  • reasoning in a range of contexts;
  • to develop a practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered and presented;
  • to explore features of shape and space, and develop measuring skills in a range of contexts;
  • to understand the importance of mathematics in everyday life.

Pupils at Farcet Primary School will leave Year 6:

  • able to calculate with confidence, fluency and understanding, using a range of independent strategies to take responsibility for their own learning including self-monitoring and correcting their own errors;
  • with a love of problem solving and a desire to collaborate with others;
  • with an interest in mathematical words and their meanings; developing a growing mathematical vocabulary to articulate their responses in discussion and reasoning skills;
  • understanding a range of mental and written strategies;
  • able to choose and efficient method of calculation appropriate to the situation;
  • using their fluency, reasoning and problem solving in diverse situations.
